marbleous, 2011, Found household furniture, faux marble tiles, 180x220x150 inches (variable).
marbleous features everyday furniture—desks, bureaus, and tables—tightly stacked and encased in a skin of faux marble vinyl tiles. Through this process, private utilitarian objects are transformed into a dense, jagged monument that is at once imposing and precarious. By using cheap industrial materials that mimic the aesthetic of classical statuary, the work interrogates how "monumental value" is constructed. The contrast between the perceived gravitas of historical authority and the thin, mass-produced veneer that simulates it reveals how concepts of permanence and power are artificially manufactured. Ultimately, the piece uses a playful approach to critically examine the systems of value and the underlying structures of authority in our society.
