community, 2014, Dimensions Variable, Household furniture, carpet

Composed of household furniture donated by a Prague community, this structure is bound tightly within a carpet commonly used in Communist Party offices during the 1960s–80s. The work stands as a material monument to the complex history of the Czech Republic, examining the friction between the state and the individual. By juxtaposing the private domesticity of the furniture with the ideological weight of the carpet, the piece interrogates the linguistic and social proximity between "Community" and "Communism." It serves as a monument to the resistance of Czech citizens, illuminating how the meaning of collective identity is both shaped and stifled by the structures of power.
